SACL continues cooperation in Greece, with a focus on the protection of the rights of foreign nationals
A delegation of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania visited Greece, where it met with representatives of the country’s courts and institutions responsible for examining asylum and migration matters. The visit took place as part of ongoing international cooperation supported by the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) and formed part of a structured programme of mutual exchange of experience aimed at strengthening the protection of the rights of foreign nationals and judicial practice in asylum cases.
During the visit, the delegation of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania attended meetings at the Administrative Court of Athens and with institutions responsible for the implementation of migration policy and the enforcement of court decisions. The discussions focused on the specific features of asylum case adjudication, challenges related to ensuring consistency in decision-making, and the role of courts in safeguarding human rights in the migration context.
According to Dr Skirgailė Žalimienė, President of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania, the visit provided an opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the experience of one of the European Union Member States most affected by migration flows.
“The judicial practice of Greece is particularly valuable, as the country has for many years been a primary point of registration for asylum seekers in the European Union. By analysing their experience and sharing our own approaches, we can strengthen judicial dialogue and help ensure that human rights are protected consistently across all Member States of the European Union,” Dr Žalimienė noted.
The visit was the fourth event in a series dedicated to the harmonisation of the application of migration and asylum law, the exchange of judicial practice, and the enhancement of judges’ professional expertise. Previous seminars were held in Vilnius, where judges and experts from various EU Member States discussed the effectiveness of asylum procedures, the reasoning of decisions, and the implementation of international standards in national courts.
International judicial cooperation in the field of migration is one of the initiatives of the EUAA Judicial Network, aimed at encouraging courts of EU Member States to exchange knowledge and good practice and to strengthen the application of the principle of the rule of law in asylum-related cases.
