SACL becomes a Member of The European Law Institute
The European Law Institute (ELI) is an international non-profit association established on 1 June 2011. Based in Vienna, ELI's aim is to enhance legal coherence in Europe and to develop European Union (EU) law by providing practical advice to policy makers and institutions. It is an independent organisation that brings together legal practitioners and academics from across Europe, from different legal traditions, in a forum for discussion and cooperation.
It contributes to the EU's broader objective of creating a European area of law and justice. The Institute assesses and promotes developments in law and legal policy and practice on a broad scale, and conducts or facilitates research at European level. The ELI carries out projects in all areas of law: substantive and procedural law; private and public law. All ELI projects must benefit European citizens, be focused on clear practical needs and be results-oriented. The projects produce publications that are directly accessible to legislators, the judiciary or other interested parties. In particular, ELI publications aim to improve knowledge and practice in relevant areas of law, while raising awareness of the legal community on the most relevant legal issues. At the same time, ELI contributes to the analysis of difficulties encountered by legal practitioners, proposes possible solutions to improve the application of EU law and prepares updates of EU legislation in all fields.
Members of the Institute may belong in two categories: full members, who participate in the Institute's activities on the basis of their personal or professional convictions, and non-voting observers, who may be either natural or legal persons (observing bodies), such as European institutions, national institutions or professional legal organisations. The European Parliament, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the highest courts of various European countries, as well as the Supreme Court of Lithuania, are observers of the Institute, and the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania has now also been granted observer rights. ELI members and external experts can submit project proposals or comments on ongoing projects to the Institute and participate in the ELI General Assembly, which is attended annually by lawyers of recognised expertise from Europe and beyond.
The Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania, which plays a special role in ensuring the application of EU law and the fundamental values on which it is based in administrative cases, will have the opportunity to contribute to ELI's activities as a member of the ELI, by providing its insights on the Institute's ongoing projects and by suggesting new projects to be carried out by the ELI, and at the same time to further increase its contribution to the promotion of the fundamental values established in EU law.
